| THE 2000TH ANNIVERSARY OF CHRISTIANITY (ORTHDOX CONFESSION)
The town of Bethlehem is famous as the birthplace of Jesus Christ and since his birth it has become a sacred place for all the Christians. Thousands of pilgrims gather there from everywhere.
Evangelist Luke says that on coming to the town of Bethlehem, Christ’s parents couldn’t find room in the hotel because it was full of alien people who had gathered from everywhere for a census conducted by the Roman authorities, so they were accommodated in a cave. It was there were Christ was born. Later the Church of Nativity was built above this cave.
Over centuries the church was enlarged and rebuilt many times, so now it is a large temple complex, the centre of which is the Cave of Nativity. Divine services, which are especially ceremonial on the patron saint’s day – Christmas, are performed in it.
The commemorative coin of the National Bank of the Republic of Belarus dedicated to the 2000th anniversary of Christianity (for Orthodox confession) depicts the Church of Nativity in Bethlehem.
