| 2004 OLYMPIC GAMES. ATHENS
The 28th Olympiad held in Athens in 2004 was the most popular sports competition of modern times.
The only competition held during the first ancient Olympic Game's in 776 BC was the stadion race - a one-stade race of 192.27 meters. Thereafter, the following events were gradually added to . the Olympic program: diaulos (or a 2-stade race), the long-distance run (a 24-stade race), wrestling, the pentathlon (which combined race, long jump, discus-throwing, target-hitting with a spear, and wrestling), chariot racing, the foot race with armor, and the pankration (involving regulated full-contact fighting, similar to today's mixed martial arts).
Best Hellenic philosophers, historians, orators, poets, actors, and musicians were honored to address the athletes and audience. Over time, the goddess Hera's temple became home to so many sculptures, bas-reliefs, vases, and paintings that Heraion turned into a huge museum, and the imposing 12-meter statue of Zeus made of ivory and gold - the masterpiece of the unrivaled Phidias -was recognized to be one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Every Hellene was dreaming of watching the Games at least once in a lifetime. That's what they were saying: "The greatest mishap is to die without seeing the statue of Zeus at Olympia."
Nowadays surviving in the famous Alpheus valley are only the ruins of the ancient stadiums and temples. But it was here that present-day throwers were competing at the 2004 Athens Games. And this is highly symbolic because we have inherited Olympic traditions through the relay of civilizations.
