| ADAM MICKIEWICZ
The year 1998 marked the 200th birthday of Adam Mickiewicz, a great Polish poet of Byelorussian descent, public figure, publicist and personality of world significance.
In his poetic works A. Mickiewicz, the founder of revolutionary romanticism in the Polish literature, had close ties with his native land — Byelorussia. He called the Byelorussian language "...the most harmonic compared with other Slavonic languages..." The religious beliefs of the Byelorussian people, their legends and traditions had been familiar to him since his childhood and they became the basis of such of his works as the dramatic poem "The Grandfathers", the ballad "Svityaz" and others. His most famous work, the poem "Pan Tadeush", also shows a detailed picture of folk life in Byelorussia, its people and nature.
A. Mickiewicz's works had a tremendous impact on the development of the Belorussian literature. A museum of Adam Mickiewicz was set up in Novogrudok and in 1924 — 1931 a memorial mound (a Mound of Immortality) was made on Zamkovaya Hill in his memory. An obelisk was erected to the famous poet in his homeland of Zaosye. Text from “Банкноты и монеты Национального Банка Республики Беларусь 1992 – 2003“ (Minsk 2003) | |
