Source of image: www.nbrb.by	THE 2006 FIFA WORLD CUP October 26, 1863 - the day on which the representatives of London and Cambridge sporting clubs, while discussing the rules of the leather ball game, divided it into football proper and... rugby, - is deemed to be the birthday of football. By the end of the 19th century football regulations of the competitions and the rules of the game had been largely legalized. The first international football competition was held during the 1900 Olympic Games in Paris with Britain winning the gold. Still, they were not pioneers - at the 1896 Olympic Games in Athens an unofficial football match between the national teams of Greece and Denmark took place, the guest team defeating the host 9-0! 80 years later, both the resuIt and the game were officially recognized and the Danish team was announced Olympic champions. The historic "mistake" was rectified by the International Federation of Football Associations (FIFA) established in 1904. Talking about football, one cannot but recall the great Jules Rimet. Thanks to his efforts, in 1930 football players got the right to hold world championships. The Baron instituted a cup depicting Nike, the Greek goddess of victory, and had it made of gold with his funds. In 1970, the Brazilian team won the tournament for the third time, which allowed them to keep the real trophy in perpetuity, as had been stipulated by the legendary FIFA president in 1930.
